The Karnataka High Court on Friday orally observed that Public Interest Litigations (PIL) were meant to serve the faceless and nameless causes in the society.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari made the observations while hearing a a PIL filed by Shekhar Iyer, a professor, challenging the creation of the post of deputy chief minister. He had claimed that the government’s decision in this regard was unconstitutional. The court orally observed that the chief minister was an office and not a post and it was the same for a minister also.
The court imposed a cost of Rs 10,000 on the petitioner on the ground that his petition did not serve any public cause. The bench directed the petitioner to deposit the amount with the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district.
