Vasudevan, a City-based advocate in his PIL has expressed apprehensions that vested interests would not hesitate to use the court verdict to incite violence to meet their ends.
Referring to the imminent verdict, he said that the 60-year old dispute may lead to a tense situation. He mentioned that the State had neither banned public meetings nor processions under Section 144 of CRPC.
He said people of the State had witnessed tensed situations during Cauvery water tribunal award when property worth lakhs of rupees was damaged and several innocents were killed. He also pointed out that Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984 triggered riots where thousands of innocents lost their lives.
Seeking directions to the State Government to maintain law and order, the petitioner has sought to file an affidavit to ensure peace and harmony as an interim prayer. The matter is likely to come up on Wednesday.
