The Karnataka High Court on Monday has disposed of a batch of public interest litigations (PIL) challenging the Karnataka government's move to declare Lingayats/Veerashaivas as religious minority after the court was informed the Central government has rejected the State's proposal in this regard.
Additional Solicitor General Prabhuling Navadgi informed the court about the Central government's decision.
He also placed a communication dated November 13, 2018, addressed to the Karnataka Government about the rejection by the Union Government.
Taking note of it, a division bench of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice S Sujatha disposed of a batch of public interest litigations challenging the panel constituted by the Karnataka State Minority Commission to look into the separate religious Minority status to Lingayats.
The panel recommended the government to accord Minority status to Lingayats and accordingly Karnataka Government sent the proposal to union government seeking Minority status.
