The plan is to encourage the private sector to set up new ITIs thereby enhance the total intake from 1.34 lakh to four lakh seats per annum. The state has presently, 158 government ITI and 146 ITIs are being run on a grant-in-aid basis, while the remaining are private institutions.

Department of Employment and Training Commissioner S R Umashankar told Deccan Herald that increasing the number of ITIs would help in ensuring a steady flow of skilled manpower to industries. Besides, the training programme would also equip the youth with practical skills enabling them to seek employment or self-employment, he said.

The Centre has already directed all states to push forward the public private partnership (PPP) model. Umashankar said the department was ready to provide subsidies to private managements who come forward to set up ITIs. The department is also planning to add new courses after consultation with the industries. The present ITIs impart education in 36 trades.
