The women’s wing of the State Congress has demanded issue of 30 tickets to women in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Addressing mediapersons here, Mahila Congress president Manjula Naidu said that a delegation led by All India Mahila Congress president Anita Verma and AICC General Secretary Shyamala Bhandari would shortly meet AICC chief Sonia Gandhi in this regard.

During the 2008 Assembly elections, only 11 tickets were given to women which constituted less than four per cent of the total seats. The party should consider giving one ticket per Lok Sabha constituency, so that there will be adequate women representation in the Assembly, she added.

“We have been trained strongly in local bodies. Women are also vocally and intellectually stronger than the other gender. When our male counterparts are losing elections despite the money and muscle power, why can’t the party consider giving us a chance to prove our mettle,” she said.

“KPCC president G Parameshwara has promised to issue 30 tickets. He should not go back on his word,” she added.

Naidu said women leaders would intensify their protests within Congress if the party failed to deliver.
