Police said the incident occurred on August 11 when a young man and a girl student from different faiths were walking together. The accused stopped them and questioned the girl for being with a man from another religion. The arrests followed a complaint by the student.

The complainant, a PU student, had gone to a service bus stand with her friend after the college hours. Her friend then left by bus. Around 3.30 pm, when the student was walking and talking with a male relative of her friend, a group of about 7-8 unidentified men confronted them, hurled abuses, and threatened her, asking why she was with a man from a different faith. The group also issued further threats, after which the young man left the spot.
