The state police may, in future, hit headlines and turn heads for a different reason: the familiar, but archaic, slouch hats of the men in uniform are likely to make way for a better-looking peak-cap.

The peak-cap is the trademark headgear of the police personnel in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and has even seen trials on a policeman in the state. The replacement is expected to happen in the coming days if all goes well.

Not just that, the police department is mulling over improving the quality of uniform for its men, both law and order and traffic categories.

Senior police officials at the DG&IGP’s office and police headquarters of the state have formed a committee to look into improving the quality of uniforms.

Poor quality

The officials have discussed the poor quality of khaki fabric that causes body odour, stuffiness and impedes free movement while working long hours in the field.

The existing fabric is polyester, which is likely to be replaced with one having a better texture, which has breathability, is sweat absorbent and is also stain repellent.

Different shades

The officials want a uniform khaki colour for all, because, at present, their men use different shades.

They are also considering a fabric that does not get easily crumpled and does not require pressing on a frequent basis. The officials also took feedback on bettering the fabric quality. However, there were no
discussions over the shoes men and women police personnel wear as the department feels the existing quality is fine.

Seeking feedback

“We are discussing on improving the quality of uniforms for which a committee has been formed. We are taking feedback from other officials as well. It’s a long process with the government to make changes to or replace the existing police uniform.
