He was speaking at the inauguration of ‘Sakshar Bharat’ organised by the district administration and District Literacy Committee at the Government PU College here.
“Honesty and hardwork have lost their meaning before money. Politicians should be blamed for the corrupt society we are living in. When such is the situation, how could we suggest children to be upright and build a good life,” he said rather philosophically.
He narrated an incident where in an officer from Bagepalli had allegedly misused the government funds for his personal interest. He called upon the students to listen to their conscience and be a proud citizens of the nation.
However, MLA K P Bachegowda said the children need not lose their hearts as not all politicians are “corrupt”. “At least some are carrying out their responsibility and true to their work,” he added.
Deputy Commissioner Anwar Pasha, Government Institute of Education faculty Prof Kodi Rangappa and others spoke on the occasion.

District In-charge Minister Mumtaz Ali Khan made students swear in the form of a poem. After inaugurating the programme, he read out several such oaths for the students.
The rate of literacy in the State is low. Students have a very important role to play in spreading literacy and making this a fully literate State. They should spread literacy among not only elders in their homes, but also among their neighbours, he added.
Students who have taken an oath today should not back out under any circumstance. They should consider it a great responsibility, said Khan.
Only if the literacy programme is put into effect in the right manner can we make some progress in building a fully literate State by 2012, he said.
