Bengaluru, DHNS: In a significant step to strengthen rural knowledge infrastructure and promote inclusivity, the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) launched the ambitious “Tarangini” programme on Tuesday. The initiative aims to equip Gram Panchayat-run Arivu Kendras (knowledge centres) with Amazon Alexa voice-assistant devices.

RDPR minister Priyank Kharge officially launched the programme, which will benefit 200 selected Arivu Kendras across the state in its first phase.

According to the statement released by RDPR minister's office, the Tarangini initiative is seen as a pivotal move towards democratising access to education, technology, and social welfare in the state’s rural areas. It seeks to ensure that marginalised communities gain from the knowledge and opportunities available through these modernised Arivu Kendras, fostering inclusive growth and empowerment across Karnataka.

Implemented in partnership with United Way Bengaluru (UWBe) and supported through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding from State Street Company, the programme acknowledges that listening remains the primary mode of learning for many persons with visual disabilities, the statement said.

Kharge emphasised that Alexa devices would significantly enhance the existing facilities at rural knowledge hubs, enabling library supervisors to engage more effectively with all community sections.

The first phase covers 200 Arivu Kendras under the jurisdictions of Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Ramanagara Zilla Panchayats.

Referring to the department’s earlier “Darshini” programme, the minister noted that eight assistive devices had already been distributed to Arivu centres to promote inclusivity for persons with disabilities.

“Building on this foundation, Tarangini will introduce the user-friendly Alexa device, designed to assist a broad range of users—including school students, teachers, parents, senior citizens, and especially persons with special needs. Users can easily interact with Alexa to access information by using voice commands, thus enhancing the learning process while saving valuable time,” he stated.

He further explained that Alexa offers students convenient features such as tracking upcoming events on their calendars, accessing study materials, and scheduling appointments with mentors or advisors—all without requiring the use of a computer. Teachers,  will also benefit from Alexa’s capabilities in lesson preparation and organising class activities.

Apart from distributing the devices, United Way Bengaluru is also providing comprehensive training to Arivu Kendra supervisors to ensure the technology is effectively utilised.

Kharge also expressed his sincere appreciation for the collaboration and support from United Way Bengaluru and State Street Company, crediting their partnership for the successful launch of the initiative.
