The State Prisons department has ordered an inquiry into the Bellary Central Prison superintendent’s alleged impropriety in arranging special facilities for former minister G Janardhana Reddy, who has been arrested in an illegal mining case.
Reddy was arrested on September 5, 2011 and was brought to the Bellary prison on August 16, as he was to be produced before the Sandur JMFC Court the next day.
The superintendent, Anand Reddy, who was on a ten-day leave, rushed to the jail on the arrival of Reddy and arranged special facilities for him, such as a new bed, a freshly painted cell, a fan and home food.
He had a showdown with T Shesha, who was the in-charge for the day, for his out-of-the-way favours for the incarcerated mining baron.
The Prisons department has issued notices to Anand Reddy and T Shesha seeking an explanation in writing. Gagan Deep, ADGP (Prisons), has directed Ravi, DIG, to probe the incident.
