These were the questioned posed by litterateur Vaidehi telling everyone that it was time to introspected themselves.
“A few years ago, men and women from Beary and other communities used to share things, used to mock at each other humorously, but nothing has remained the same. We should ask ourselves why we live in a dry society now. At least the Beary Sammelana should offer answers to a few such questions,” she said.
She was presiding over a session- ‘Sahithigalondige Mukhamukhi’ at the last day of Beary Sammelana-2011 at Town Hall on Sunday.
In her presidential address she called upon the Beary community members to protect their language from the influence of English.
“Do not send your children to English medium schools, because the children would forget their mother tongue. Send them to a school where they learn English as a language, so that they would be fluent in Beary, Kannada and English languages,” she stressed.
‘Support good movies’
Kannada Film Director P Sheshadri in his talk on ‘the significance of story in cinema’, hoped for a day when Kannada movies are produced based on a good story.
When he was asked why good movies are not produced in Kannada unlike Malayalam cinema industry, he said it was because of the poor audience response.
“Several good movies (art movies) have been produced in Kannada, but how many of you have watched them in theater?” he asked and said when he produced ‘Bettada Jeeva’ (based on Dr Shivarama Karnath’s novel) and screened it in Mangalore the movie did not run for more than a week.
Lyricist Jayanth Kaikini wondered why the good litterateurs in Kannada always maintained distance from the cinema industry.
“In every cinema industry, including Bollywood, the popular litterateurs write lyrics for cinema songs. But it has never happened in Kannada. May it be Kuvempu, Karanth or Bendre, they never wrote songs or stories for cinema,” he said.
He also said that 40 percent of the world class movies are based on novels or stories.
But such trend is not found in India.
A day should come where more number of movies should be made based on good novels and stories, he told.
The Beary Sammelana was concluded on Sunday evening on a colourful note.
