Mysuru: Writer, retired professor and dean of the Department of Studies in Political Science, and former acting Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore Prof Muzaffar Assadi, 63 breathed his last at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Friday night. He had undergone cardiac surgery on Thursday.
His mortal remains will be kept at the Muslim Hostel at Saraswathipuram in Mysuru, from 3:30 pm to 5 pm on Saturday to allow people to pay their last respects. A resident of Asher, New Kantharaj Urs Road, Saraswathipuram, he hailed from Shirva of Udupi district. He is survived by his wife, Hajra Masroor; daughter, Mehak Assadi and son Mehdi Assadi.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has condoled his death on X. President of PUCL, Mysuru, Kamal Gopinath and several others have also expressed their condolences.
Prof Assadi had served as Chairman of the High Court committee on displacement and rehabilitation of tribals. He had authored seven books including Politics of Peasant Movement in Karnataka, Shipra.
'Colonial and Post-Colonial Identity Politics in South Asia' was his latest book. Prof Assadi was the recipient of the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award 2011.
He had served as a member of the Senate, Syndicate, Academic Council and other bodies of UoM. He was the President of the Mysore University teachers’ association and Vice President of PUCL, Mysuru. He was a trustee/governing council member of a couple of NGOs. He had held several distinguished positions.
Prof Assadi authored several articles that were published in national and international journals. He had written course materials for at least seven universities (distance education). He also presented papers at several national and international seminars/conferences.
He had guided several PhD research scholars. He specialised in Agrarian studies globalization, Gandhism, Political Sociology, Democratic Theory, Social Movements, Comparative Government and Politics, Human Rights in India, Ideology and Global Political Theory.
