Demanding housing facilities for the tribal communities, members of SC/ST Hakkugala Horata Samithi staged a protest in front of the Mini Vidhana Soudha in Virajpet on Monday.

Addressing the protesters, Samithi president Mayamudi Ramesh said that tribals are still residing in line houses of the estates. Though a survey was conducted two years ago, the majority of the families were dropped out of the survey. There is a need to conduct a resurvey.

He said tribal families are still devoid of ration cards, Aadhaar cards and other suitable documents.

Fifty-nine families residing at Barikadu should be supplied with potable drinking water. Streetlights should be installed in the colony at Barikadu. Cultivation chits should be distributed to 51 families residing in Terme Kadu Paisari. The compensation for those who were killed in the tiger attack should be enhanced to Rs 25 lakh each, he added.

Further, he said that Virajpet Government Hospital should be entrusted to the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences.
