It was a day of protests in city with members and students joining hands to show their solidarity on the safety of women.
Demanding transfer of Sowjanya rape and murder case to CBI, members of CPM staged a protest in Mandya, on Wednesday.
They took out a jatha from Sir M Visvesvaraya statue on Mysore-Bangalore highway and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They submitted a memorandum to the DC’s office.
The agitators stressed that if the government had real concern over curbing atrocities against women, the Sowjanya case of Ujire should be handed over to the CBI for judicial probe. The protesters alleged that even after one year, the accused in the murder and rape case have not been arrested.
They appealed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah through the DC that the case should be handled transparently and the investigating agency should not yield to political, social and financial pressure.
Atrocities on women
Meanwhile, members of Akhila Bharatha Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) too staged a protest against atrocities on women and submitted a memorandum to the President through Deputy Commissioner. They demanded that the cases related to sexual harassment and others should be conducted in fast track court and the guilty be punished.
They also urged the government to open helpline centres for women, making it mandatory to depute women constables at all the police stations, committee against sexual harassment at all the educational institutions and others.
The other demands put forth by them included curbing foeticide, financial aid for women, ban pornography in social websites and workshop on women security in educational institutions.
Earlier, the students also took out an awareness rally, seeking safety of women. Student leaders Pooja, Rashmi, Prameela, Nisarga and others were present.
