Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder and lightning lashed parts of Hubballi on Saturday afternoon, disrupting normal life and providing the much-needed respite from summer heat. Belagavi and Bailhongal taluks, too, received the unseasonal rainfall, cheering farmers.

The rainfall in Hubballi — the first downpour of the year — caught people unawares and caused flash floods on the city’s roads. Trees and electricity poles got uprooted in several places.

Three people, including a child, were injured when a peepal tree crashed on a house at Channapet in Old Hubballi. Dharwad, just 20 km from Hubballi, did not receive any rainfall though thick clouds did hover over the city.

It rained for over 45 minutes on the outskirts of Belagavi city and in Kakati, Honaga, Bhutramatti and other villages of Belagavi taluk. Belagavi city, however, had to be content with just a cloudy sky.

In Bailhongal town and the surrounding villages of Sampgaon, Sanikoppa and Bailwad, rainfall cheered people, especially farmers, who had been facing the oppressive summer heat. While the downpour brought down the mercury, it heaped misery on people living in low-lying areas. Strong winds blew away the roof of a shed and damaged 15 bagfuls of soyabean.
