He was speaking after performing groundbreaking puja for the pipeline works for Sattegala drinking water project near Belakavadi in Malavalli taluk, Mandya district, on Monday. He also inspected the ongoing works.

Shivakumar said, "The project has been taken up at a cost of Rs 540 crore. It would provide permanent drinking water to Ramanagara, Kanakapura, Channapatna and Magadi taluks".

"We had promised to provide drinking water to Ramanagara district during the Channapatna by-election. We are committed to our promise," the Shivakumar said and added around 3.30 tmcft of water will be released at a lesser cost.

The project would provide drinking water to around 10.82 lakh people of Bengaluru South district, and 9.03 lakh livestock, solving drinking water issues faced since several years, due to deficiency in rainfall, he added.

Around 220 cusec of water from Sattegala dam will be released to Iggalur Barrage for 180 days through a 26-km long gravity canal, 12.5-km long tunnel and 13.35-km long pipeline.

From Iggalur Barrage, the water would be lifted to fill Mohanahalli lake. From there to Kanva reservoir, then to Manchanabele and YG Gudda reservoirs, he added.

Currently, around 11.33 km tunnel works have been completed and the lining is under progress. Around 670-metre tunnel work is pending, he added.
