They were taken aback when they saw two Rapido bike drivers providing rental services to the public at Durgigudi.

The auto drivers said they were already suffering financial losses and struggling to feed their families due to a lack of passengers. Allowing bike taxis to operate would add to their woes and prove detrimental to their livelihood.

When the auto drivers enquired the Rapido bike driver about Transport Department permission, the biker said he was unaware of it but the service was already available in Bengaluru and other cities. They aim to provide rental services to the public at minimum rates in Shivamogga.

They said they are charging Rs 20 for the first two km and Rs 30 for the next two km.

“Rapido has provided jobs to many unemployed youths like us. It also benefits the public. Customers have booked the bike services online and accordingly, I have come here to provide rental services,” said the bike driver.

Later, auto drivers complained that the Rapido bikes were providing rental services with their own private whiteboard bikes violating the law.

Following the complaint, Jayanagar police visited the spot and seized two Rapido vehicles as private vehicles are not allowed to provide Rapido services.
