Under the supervision of Urologist Dr Ravindra Patil a team of doctors consisting of Dr Girish, Dr Smitha Patil, Dr Deepa Swamy and Dr Sharan Patil of the Patil Lithotrypsy and Nursing Home here have performed the surgery successfully.
Shaikh Mehboob (80) of Shastri Nagar here had been suffering from urinary problem from the last couple of years. The lower portion of abdomen had swollen with stones blocking the bladder neck leading to retention of urine.
Mehboob had severe problem in discharging urine. The surgery involved cystoscopy for removal of 250 stones of varying size from 8 mm to 15 mm. A catheter is kept to drain the bladder and is removed after 48 hours. Though the surgery is invasive it does not involve any cutting of any part of the body and blood transfusion, said Dr Ravindra Patil adding that the patient can be discharged 48 hours after the removal of the catheter.
Attributing the formation of so many stones in the urinary bladder to the metabolic phenomenon, Dr Patil said it was very rare to come across more than 200 stones of varying size from an individual. “In the past we had a record of removing 206 stones and this is for the first time in our 25 years practice that we have come across 250 stones,’’ Dr Patil said.
