Renovated mortuary in Udupi opens

The mortuary has been renovated at the cost of Rs 25 lakhs as this mortuary was in deteriorating condition since 3 years forcing people to take the dead bodies to the mortuary in KMC hospital Manipal covering nearly 6 kms distance. The new mortuary has the capacity to accommodate as many as 9 bodiesat a time. MLA Raghupathy Bhat who inaugurated the mortuary assured public to take up the matter immediately with PWD officials seeking assistance on measures to set right the leakages. The contractor who constructed the structure will be asked to set right the damages as per the guidelines of PWD officials, he added

Speaking after inaugurating the mortuary, Bhat informed that a proposal has been sent to government to demand upgradation of the district hospital. Even after 13 years of district status accorded to Udupi, the condition of the district hospital is similar to taluk hospital. The hospital should be upgraded. If it is done, then the number of beds in the hospital will be increased to 250 from the present 120 beds, he added.

The Government has assured to sanction the money to upgrade the hospital, in the next budget. Udupi district hospital was in the list for up-gradation besides 8 other hospitals in the plan announced in the last budget.

District Surgeon Dr Chandrasekhar Adiga informed that BPL card holders and orphan dead bodies and bodies under police cases can avail the benefits of mortuary free of cost.
