The 54-year old, who is based in Chennai, underwent cadaver liver transplant, harvested from a brain dead person, after being diagnosed with Metastatic liver cancer, a rare type of cancer detected in the liver but originating from some other part of the body. "It's a new life for me," said Ramachandran.
He recalls that the most difficult part in his surgery was removal of his inflamed liver, which weighed 6.5 kilos (normal liver weighs between one and two kilos). Ramachandran's troubles started in 2007, where he was found to have a large growth in his colon. By June, 2009 his condition deteriorated. He was referred to Dr Mohamed Rela from BGS Hospital.
In December, Ramchandran was told that liver transplant was the only option. Within a month of registering with all the three centres of BGS Hospitals, he was intimated of the availability of a liver from a cadaver patient in March, 2010. The surgery was carried out by a team of 15 doctors lead by Professor Mohamed Rela.
