Inaugurating the debate and discussion competition organised for students at Balehonnur BGS Science Pre University College, as a part of Press Day celebration on Tuesday, he said that field of journalism is not just a business, it is a service to the society.

Sringeri National Rajiv Gandhi Sanskritha Vidyapeeth English Professor M S Vinay presented a special paper and said that newspapers are like mirrors which reflect the condition of the society. He opined that the responsibility of making the government take up developmental works wrests on the shoulders of press and hence they have a greater role to play in nation building process.

Citing example of Water Gate scam of America, he said that newspapers have the responsibility to change the society for the good by creating awareness among the people.

He said that various ingredients of a newspaper such as information, education, entertainment must be blended properly for a good product.

N R Pura Taluk Working Journalists Association President Hathur Prabhakar said that job of a reporter is not a cake walk. A reporter has to work against influence, money power, threat and various other external factors which influence his work. “Reporters who work against such factors become victim of attacks and hence Government must provide adequate security to journalists,” he said. BGS College Development Advisory Committee Member M K Sundaresh, Taluk Working journalists Association Vice-President Yajna Purusha Bhat among others were present. The gathered maintained a minute of silence to condole the death of musical maestro Gangubai Hanagal.
