Belagavi: Six pilgrims returning from Maha Kumbh were killed after the driver of their speeding MUV lost control of the vehicle and rammed it into a divider near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. Two others also suffered severe injuries in the accident.

Sources said, that the group hailing from Gokak which comprised friends and relatives had left for Prayagraj last Tuesday and were on their way back home.

While their vehicle was crossing Jabalpur, MUV driver Mustaq Shindikurbet lost control of the car and rammed the vehicle into a divider. This led to the car overturning

Six persons killed on the spot were identified as Balachandra Narayan Goudar (50), Sunil Balakrishna Shedeshak (45), Basavaraj Nirpadappa Kurati (63), Basavaraj Shivappa Dodmal (49) Guruwar Peth, Iranna Shankarappa Shebinkatti (27) and Virupaksha Channa Gumati (61).

The two grievously injured are MUV driver Mustaq Shindikurbet and Sadashiv Kedari Upalani.

Sadashiv Upalani told DH over phone that the vehicle toppled after the driver hit the divider in which six of his accomplices were killed on the spot while he and the driver suffered injuries.

Postmortem proceedings of the deceased have been completed and their remains will be sent to Gokak.

BJP workers from the district who were also returning from Prayagraj were 20 km ahead of the accident spot.

After getting to know about it, Kittur block president Srikar Kulkarni, Siddu Bolannavar, Raviraj Inmadar returned to the spot and coordinated with Siroha police to come to aid of the injured and completed the formalities to bring the remains of those killed to Gokak.

Public Works Department and District Incharge Minister Satish Jarkiholi said, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police were coordinating with the Jabalpur District Administration to bring the remains of the deceased back to Gokak.

The remains will be arriving on Tuesday.
