Public Works Minister H C Mahadevappa said on Tuesday that the department would incorporate a new software in the online system for issuing passes to transport sand.
This is expected to weed out loopholes in the system.
Addressing mediapersons in the city, Mahadevappa said truckers were transporting several loads on sand on a single pass by duplicating it.
The new system will help monitor the track record of sand transporters, that of the buyers and the place where sand is transported to.
The software will become operational from July 1 and distribution of sand will be streamlined in the next six months, he said.
The minister said that measures would be taken to provide information to people on availability of sand and ensure that sand reaches genuine users at affordable rates.
Over 300 checkposts would come up across the State to check illegal transportation of sand. The truckers have been asked to instal Global Positioning Systems in their vehicles, to bring in transparency in the sand distribution system.
On a query over allegations of harassment and extortion made against his son by truckers, Mahadevappa said the allegations were baseless. “The State government will not allow plundering of natural resources and there is scope only for legal sand mining,” he said.
Over the delay in implementation the ring road project in Belgaum, he promised to discuss the issue with the Urban Development department and insist on its early implementation.
