Udupi: In a late-night special drive on Saturday, the Udupi subdivision police conducted surprise vehicle inspections at five locations under the Manipal police station limits.
The operation was held as part of a naka bandi initiative targeting violations of traffic and motor vehicle act.
Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said during the drive, police seized 21 vehicles — including 18 cars and 3 two-wheelers. Motorists were found driving under the influence of alcohol. Cases have been registered against them under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
As per the law, drunk driving offenders face a minimum fine of Rs 10,000 upon conviction in court. In addition, a spot fine of Rs 10,000 was collected from 10 vehicle owners who were found violating rules such as triple riding, reckless driving, and disobeying police signals.
The operation was carried out under the direction of Udupi Superintendent of Police. It was led by the Udupi DySP and Manipal Police Inspector, with participation from personnel of Udupi Town Police, Udupi Traffic Police, Malpe Police, and Manipal Police.
The SP stated that such enforcement drives will continue in the coming days, particularly targeting drunk driving, speed, and negligent driving in Udupi district.
