State's sex ratio up

Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Chamarajnagar, Mysore and Dharwad districts have done exceptionally well. The Bangalore Urban district has an abysmal ratio of 908 females for 1000 males, hitting the bottom in the district-wise ranking, according to the provisional figures of the Census 2011 released on Wednesday.

Udupi, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan and Chikmagalur have more females (against 1,000 males) and they are on top of the ranking list. However, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kolar districts have recorded a decline in the sex ratio compared to the Census 2001 figures.

Chamarajnagar, Mysore, Shimoga and Kodagu have climbed the rank ladder quite fast in the last 10 years. For instance, Chamarajnagar, one of the most backward districts, was ranked 14 in sex ratio in 2001, with 971 females. It has now climbed to the eighth rank with 989 females.There has  been no change in sex ratio in Koppal (983), Bangalore Rural (945) and Bangalore Urban (908) districts against the 2001 Census figures.

There has been a decline in child sex ratio (children between 0 and 6 years) in the State: It has slid from 946 in 2001 to 943 in 2011. The State has 68.55 lakh child population, of which 35.27 lakh are male and 33.27 lakh female. Kodagu (977), Hassan (964) and Chikmagalur (963) districts top the list of the highest child sex ratio. There has been a perceptible decline in child sex ratio in Chamarajnagar, Davanagere, Raichur, Chitradurga and Haveri.
