Dakshina Kannada Beedi Badi Vyaparasthara Sangha members staged a protest condemning atrocities on street vendors near deputy commissioner’s office.

The activists urged authorities to convene a Town Vending Committee (TVC) meeting at the earliest for grievance redressal.

Honorary President B K Imthiyaz urged the authorities to issue certificates and identity cards for the street vendors under Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojane- National Urban Livelihood Mission.

The identity cards issued in past had failed to reach the genuine vendors. Hence, identity cards issued in the past should be cancelled. A fresh survey should be conducted by involving the members of the Sangha to issue identity cards to the street vendors, he sought.

Adviser Vasanth Achari said street vendors from State Bank area to Hampankatta should be allowed to sell in the street vendors’ zone identified. The authorities should identify sports for street food park or street food vending zone, which will help the poor to get food at reasonable price. The food zone should be identified near Indira Canteen at Town Hall, near old bus stand, Kankanady and near KSRTC bus stand.

Adequate facilities should be provided at the street vending zones identified. Street vendors should be identified under Smart City Mission. He urged the MCC to stop eviction of street vendors, he said.
