There was a cacophony of voices...”You clear the weeds...We will lift the earth...Look at this interesting veeragallu (hero stone)...Who installed it by the side of the drain...Let’s finish our work...”
These were the students of Govindateertha College of Nandi Hobli. As a part of an annual special camp of the National Service Scheme (NSS) the students helped in cleaning up Yaluvahalli village sharing the work among themselves.
Cleaner temples
The students helped in cleaning the cattle pond, main road of the village, Basaveshwara temple, Narasimhaswamy temple and Shanimahatma temple.
They removed the weeds around the veeragallu and cleared the drain to ensure the smooth flow of water.
Daily work
Every day, the students routine would begin at 5 am and end at 10 am.
During the daytime the students engaged in work, while in the evening they entertained the villagers with cultural programmes.
“In all 54 students participated in the camp. Since most of these students are from a rural background they worked with great devotion”, said programme officer R Manjanna.
“The students got a lot of encouragement and support from the residents of the village,” the programme officer added.

“Their routine comprised of all-religions bhajans at 6 am, flag hoisting at 6.30 am followed by yoga, breakfast and work.
“From 3 pm to 5 pm special lecture programme and from 6 to 8 conducting sports and cultural programme for the villagers”, said K P Devaraj, lecturer at the Govindateertha College.
