The ruling BJP is all set to lose an MLA, Sureshgouda Patil from Byadagi of Haveri district. Patil tendered resignation to his Assembly membership to Speaker K G Bopaiah on Wednesday. The resignation is yet to be accepted by the Speaker.

Patil, who was earlier with the Congress, may return to it to contest on that party’s ticket in the next Assembly elections. He is not sure of getting the BJP ticket as the party MLC,
Shivaraj Sajjan of Haveri, is keen on contesting from Byadagi.

The party, it is said, has also promised him the ticket. Another reason for his resignation is that he is not seeing much future for the BJP in the district without Yeddyurappa.

Patil, a Lingayat, is not a political heavyweight. Before joining the BJP in 2008, the chilli merchant was president of the town municipal council. He has said that he would like to concentrate on his business rather than politics at this juncture.

“I met Speaker Bopaiah and personally handed over my resignation letter. There is no political intention behind my resignation,” Patil told Deccan Herald.

It is said Patil is hurt by the domination of another BJP MLA, Nehru Olekar, over Haveri district in which his constituency falls. Olekar is also the chairperson of the SC/ST Commission. Patil was keen that a candidate of his choice be elected president of the Kerudi Gram Panchayat. However, that was not to be. A candidate owing allegiance to Olekar was elected president of the GP, sources said.

Haveri district, a Lingayat belt, is emerging as a political hotspot with Yeddyurappa planning to launch his new party at a mammoth function in the district on December 10.
