Chikkamagaluru: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said on Saturday that a public protest and a legal fight would be taken up against the government’s move to take over the affairs of the Gali Anjaneyaswamy temple in Bengaluru.

“A Hindu temple belongs to its devotees. People visit it with faith and reverence. It is wrong on the part of the government to target temples over trivial reasons. This is an unacceptable move,” he told reporters here.

“Without issuing any notice or conducting an investigation, the government has set its eyes on the temple’s hundi (donation box), which receives crores of rupees. I have spoken with the temple trustee. We will approach the court on Monday and also stage a protest in Vijayanagar in Bengaluru (where the temple is situated),” Surya said.

“Does the government have the courage to take over mosques or churches? Just because Hindus remain silent, it doesn’t mean the government can target temples. Such things must stop,” the MP said.

He said, “The government is incapable of curbing corruption. Still, it wants to interfere in the affairs of temples run with devotion. Under no circumstances should devotees be disturbed. The government lacks credibility, yet it talks about temples. While it has lost grip over its own affairs, it is now eyeing temple affairs.”
