The Vice-Chancellor had planned a convention centre for the university at Bheemanakuppe near Kengeri. According to the Syndicate members, the proposal to set up multiple campuses costs Rs 600 crore for the varsity. The proposal was put forth in the Syndicate meeting held on August 20.
"The move will further delay the dream of having a campus of our own," said a senior member of the Syndicate. He said the Vice-Chancellor had mooted a proposal to set up a library, staff quarters as well as auditorium in Bheemanakuppe.
Proposal grounded
The university has had trouble setting up a new campus ever since it was established in 1996.
It is currently located on the premises of the Sanjay Gandhi Accident Hospital and Research Institute in Jayanagar.
The proposal by then chief minister H D Kumaraswamy in 2007 for a new campus was welcomed by several academicians.
The Government sanctioned Rs 333 crore and allotted nearly 100 acres of land for the new campus. However, the project has not taken off after the BJP came to power. The varsity was also allotted 50 acres of land in Kengeri.
Several Syndicate members claimed that shifting the campus from the City to Ramanagaram would inconvenience the students. Tasks such as granting affiliation to medical and paramedical colleges, conducting exams and issuance of certificates to students are being carried out at the present campus. Students will be put to hardship if the campus is shifted to Kengeri or Ramanagaram. At least, provision should be made for an administrative office in the City,” said Nitin, a student.
