Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology (MIFT) in association with the Department of Textiles and Handlooms will hold training for unemployed youth in tailoring under Suvarna Vastraneethi, at its premises in Mangalore.

Addressing a press meet, MIFT Director M G Hegde said that Department of Textiles and Handlooms has set up a full-fledged unit in MIFT with 48 sewing machines to impart training to the youth.
He said minimum 40 youth can be given training in the unit at a time.

The applicant should have passed seventh standard and must be below 35 years of age. The selected will get a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month. Three types of training are given for the applicants viz one month, two month and three month.

The initial month-long training focuses on the operation of electrical and electronic sewing machines, with special emphasis on how to control the speed and maximise production and stitching. The training will help many youth in securing jobs in the readymade garment manufacturing units, in Bangalore and Hassan. “In fact, we are in contact with 10 garment manufacturing companies for providing placement for the trained youth,” he added.

He said there is a demand for cutting experts, quality control assistants and embroidery tailors. There is a need for 10,000 tailors for the garment units in Bangalore and Hassan. The MSW students are creating awareness among unemployed youth in and around Mangalore on Suvarna Vastraneethi.

However, several youth are not ready to get trained as many feel that tailoring is not a good profession, he said adding that pamphlets are distributed among the youth.

Two staffs from MIFT were given special training at Garment Training Institute in Bangalore, to impart training for the unemployed youth in the institute.

He said the institute with 20 machines was providing free training for unemployed youth for the last two years. “We had organised training in tailoring for 10 batches of students with 20 students each. About 150 trained youth are working in and around Mangalore and Manipal,” he said.

The best student in each batch hailing from economically poor background was given an electrically operated sewing machine free of cost by the institute chairman Dr Aroor Prasad Rao.
