As solar energy is the most talked about non-conventional source of energy, how can the khadi board remain in the oblivion?
Chairman of the board Shankara Gowda Haravi has plans to tap solar energy in khadi production. This will come in handy with most products of khadi being the creations of deft hands.
The yarn is produced either from hand operated traditional ‘charaka’ (spinning wheel) propagated by none other than Mahatma Gandhiji or improvised wheels.
Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialisation, New Delhi vetted into the proposal and also did a survey exploring its possibilities. The institute has responded in positive. Another concept is ‘cotton to garments’.
The remaining proposals include- reviving the khadi centre at Badanavalu in Nanjangud taluk in Mysore district, Rs 25 lakh aid for khadi bhandars (sales outlets) and opening of five new bhandars every year.
In Mysore city alone there are four sales outlets and the business is impressive, Nagaraju said. There are a total of 300 outlets across the State.
