They demanded that the disparity in salaries between Degree and PU teachers be addressed and asked for a hike in their daily evaluation allowance.
The PU teachers contended that the number of classes and work hours was the same as that of degree teachers and therefore the salaries should be equitable. Evaluation was boycotted for half a day in Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Belgaum, Dharwad and Shimoga districts. In Bangalore alone, 4,000 PU teachers at all 16 evaluation centres went on strike.
And over 12,000 teachers from 26 other centres across the State also joined in the protest.
The PU teachers and Principals Association stated each evaluator must value 24 answer scripts each day and the half a day boycott means that each teacher would have valued only 12 scripts.
However, they promised that evaluation will be completed within the stipulated time as each teacher who went on strike had already pledged to put in an additional hour in the coming days to make up for the lost time.
