Madikeri: A boy died and a youth is missing after a boat capsized in the River Cauvery at Kadiyattur–Kooruli, near Napoklu in Madikeri taluk on Monday.
The body of Girish (16) from the nearby Cherambane village has been recovered. A search operation is ongoing in the river for Ayyappa (18), who was with him, according to the police.
During the monsoon season, the River Cauvery flows forcefully in this area. As a result, the nearby Donikadu village can only be accessed by boat. The boat had been kept anchored at the riverbank.
A group of eight friends had come to the river to bathe. Girish and Ayyappa took the boat to the middle of the river. Due to the depth and the strong current, the boat capsized. Despite efforts by a person named Deviprasad to rescue them, he was unsuccessful as neither of them could swim.
Fire and emergency service personnel are conducting a search for Ayyappa in the river. Napoklu police sub-inspector Manjunath visited the spot.
