Teen's heart now beats in 56-yr-old man

The heart of a 17-year-old now beats in a 56-year-old man. Yet another heart transplant was carried out in Bengaluru early on Friday morning.

The teen had met with a road accident and was admitted to Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, on January 12. He was declared brain-dead on January 19. Following his family’s consent to organ donation, his heart, liver, kidneys and corneas were harvested.

The recipient had heart attacks twice — one 14 years ago and another in 2013 when he underwent angioplasty, but that helped little. His heart function was reducing progressively and doctors treating him declared that heart transplant was the only hope of his survival.

The teen’s heart was sent from Fortis Hospital to Narayana Health, Hosur Road, after police created a green corridor at 10.55 pm on Thursday. This helped the ambulance carrying the heart cover a distance of 25 km in just 19 minutes.
