Ten killed, five injured in van-truck collision

The van was heading towards Basavakalyan town from Kohinoor village when it collided with the lorry heading towards Mumbai from Hyderabad at 12.30 pm.

Police said nine of the 10 deceased were from Kohinoor village. The deceased were identified as Umesh (36), Ramesh (30), Dilip (45), Suresh (30), Hanumanth (45) Lalbi (4), Mamata (18), Shaku Bai (30), Devamma (40), all residents of Kohinoor and Ghulam Nabi (45), a resident of Betgera village.

The five injured, including the van driver, were shifted to a hospital at Basavakalyan town. The condition of one of the injured is said to be serious.

The lorry driver fled from the spot. The accident caused a major traffic jam on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway. Senior police officials visited the spot.

Elected representatives including MLA Basavaraj Patil Atoor, MP N Dharam Singh visited the hospital and consoled the bereaved families. A case has been registered at the Basavakalyan traffic police station inthis regard.
