A two-day workshop organised for 78 newly-elected legislators started with a lukewarm response as less than half of them did not show up Thursday.

There are 61 first-time legislators in the Legislative Assembly and 17 in the Legislative Council. Of them, only 30 attended the morning session of the workshop that was held in the Vikas Soudha. Addressing those who were present, Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar said: “At no cost should you be absent for legislature sessions. You should make use of the opportunity you have, because not everybody gets to sit in the place you occupy.”

Kumar asked legislators to attend legislature session even if the subjects for discussion were not relevant for them. “Study the agenda, make sure you dress well,” he said. Legislative Council chairperson Basavaraj Horatti lamented that of late, legislators attended sessions just for the sake of signing attendance. “They’ll simply while their time away sitting in the lounge.”
