Heralding the centenary celebrations of University of Mysore (UoM), Chief Minister Siddaramaiah released the theme song at Open Air Theatre, Manasagangotri, here on Sunday. The song was released as a prelude to the opening of year-long centenary celebrations of the university by President Pranab Mukherjee on July 27.

The theme song, penned by poets C P Krishnakumar, K Y Narayanaswamy, R Ramakrishna among others, has been set to music by renowned music director Hamsalekha. The song, apart from lauding the achievements of the university, also charts a brief history in four minutes.

On the occasion, Siddaramaiah noted that it was due to the vision of Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, the university saw its birth in Mysuru. Wadiyar had envisioned education for all the sections of the society and succeeded in setting up the university. The chief minister also acknowledged the contribution of then Dewan Sir M Visvesvaraya towards the founding of the varsity.

He also noted the contributions of various vice chancellors in the development of the university which will celebrate its centenary next year. Recalling that he was also a student of the university, Siddaramaiah said that the State government had sanctioned Rs 50 crore for the centenary celebrations.

Following the inaugural function, Open Air Theatre was witness to a melange of cultural programmes. A ballet of songs were also performed.

The university founded, in the year 1916, is stepping into its 100th year on July 27.

‘Suicide not a solution’

Commenting on the recent string of farmer suicides in the State, Siddaramaiah said that suicide is not a solution.

He rued, “Every problem has a solution. But it is not possible to find a solution by committing suicide.”

By taking such drastic steps, the farmers are only shifting the burden of loans and other responsibilities to their kith and kin. The farmers should understand this and refrain from committing suicide, he said.

“Farmers should face the problems with confidence. The State government is with you,” he said.

He also offered condolences to the farmers who have committed suicide during the past few days in the State.

‘Annadaatara Aathmakathe’, a book on successful farmers written by journalist Amshi Prasanna Kumar was also released.

Revenue and District In-charge Minister V Srinivas Prasad, Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree, MP Pratap Simha, Chamaraja MLA Vasu and others were present.
Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar added colour to the event.
