Mangaluru: The Vittal police arrested three persons for allegedly stealing money from a donation box (kanike katte) belonging to a place of worship at Kanyana in Bantwal taluk.
The arrested are Twaheed (19), Ummar Farooq (18), and Mohammad Nabeel (18),all residents of Vittla Kasaba village, said the police.
Unidentified miscreants broke open two donation boxes belonging to a place of worship and allegedly stole cash estimated to be between Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000.
According to the complaint lodged by D Narayana Rao (72), a resident of Delantabettu, Kanyana, who also serves as the president of the place of worship, the donation boxes were installed by the roadside near the Delantabettu school.
Rao, who regularly collects the offerings, discovered the theft during a routine visit to the site on July 26, when he found that both donation boxes had been forcibly opened and the money stolen.
Based on his complaint, a case has been registered at Vittal Police Station under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is in progress.
