Mangaluru: Three cops, including Mangaluru rural police station inspector Shivakumar K R, head constable Chandra P and constable Yallalinga, accused of misleading higher police officials in the Kudupu mob lynching case were suspended on charges of dereliction of duty.
On April 27, a cricket tournament was organised at the ground behind Bhattara Kallurti shrine near Kudupu. A spectator identified as Deepak had reportedly contacted Mangaluru rural police station to inform them that a mob was lynching an unidentified man. Deepak however was asked to dial 112.
The police aware about the mob lynching had allegedly misled top police officials, who had visited the spot and had even involved some of the accused cricket players in the body's mahajar process. Police officials kept in dark about the mob lynching initially registered the case as a UDR (Unnatural Death Report).
With many organisations highlighting the lapses in investigation into Kudupu mob lynching case in social media, the case was re-registered under mob lynching sections. The three police personnel were suspended for gross negligence in failing to alert senior officers about the incident, despite having prior knowledge of mob lynching, sources added.
