Dharwad: In a heart-wrenching incident, a three-and-a-half-year-old boy died in an accidental fire accident while his father suffered serious burn injuries here on Saturday.
The incident was reported from Santosh Nagar on Kelgeri road in Dharwad. The deceased boy has been identified as Agastya and his injured father as Chandrakant Mashal.
Agastya’s grandmother Suvarna had kept a potsherd (fire pan) for the post-delivery care of her daughter and poured thinner into it. This led to sudden surge in flames and Agastya who was standing near the pan was engulfed by the flames.
A frightened, screaming boy embraced his father Chandrakant for rescue. On hearing the screams the neighbours rushed to Mashal’s house and tried to douse the fire and save the duo. However by that time, Agastya had suffered serious burns and died within minutes. Chandrakant, who has suffered 80 per cent burn injuries, was rushed to the KMC-RI in Hubballi.
Agastya’s grandmother Suvarna has also sustained injuries on her face.
The newborn and his mother who were in a separate room are safe.
Dharwad Suburban Police have registered a case in the matter.
