For students of Canara High School (Urwa), art goes beyond canvas. The children have turned their school compound wall into a masterpiece with paintings depicting the culture and practices of Tulunadu.

The line-art on Warli art background has paintings on Bhootharadhana, Yakshagana, car festival, religious places in Mangalore and also important incidents from Hindu mythologies. In addition, proverbs on good moral values and slogans stressing the importance of Kannada, have also been painted.

Art camp

The interesting art was a result of an art-camp that was organised by the school in April. As many as 30 students took part in the camp and learnt various art techniques. The students then decided to apply their skills on beautifying the school compound walls, which were otherwise dirtied with ugly bills and spit marks.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Canara High School (Urwa) Art Teacher Harish Acharya said that free art camps are organised for its students during the summer holidays, since many years.

“Many treat art as a secondary subject. However, in Canara School, art is given importance as any other subject. Art camps motivate students. Many students from our school have become full time artists,” he said.

“This year, we chose the theme Dashavathara and painted various episodes related to each of the avatar. This has enriched the knowledge of students with regard to Hindu mythology as well as art. The expense of wall painting was borne by the school management,” he added.

“Extra-curricular activities along with academics is very important for the overall development of the student. At Canara, we ensure all-round development of the children,” said School Headmaster Ashok Pandith.
