Angry villagers attack Range Forest Officer Devaraj at Kallare village in Alur taluk of Hassan district on Tuesday after an elephant trampled a farmer to death. KPN

A farmer was trampled to death by a tusker at Kallare village in Alur taluk on Tuesday early morning.The victim has been identified as Krishnegowda, a resident of the same village. 

On Tuesday early morning, Krishnegowda was on his way to his farm when a tusker charged at him suddenly. Though he ran away from the place, the tusker chased and trampled him to death.

RFO attacked

The villagers gathered in large numbers as soon as the news spread and staged a protest. They even attacked Range Forest Officer Devaraj who visited the spot. 

DFO Appurao, who arrived at the spot, was also manhandled forcing Deputy Commissioner V Anbukumar and MLA H K Kumaraswamy to visit the village.

The residents withdrew their support after the DC and the legislator promised to launch an operation on Wednesday to trap the tusker and announced ex gratia for the kin of the deceased.
