Mandya: Two people drowned while one was washed away after the car in which they were travelling allegedly plunged into the Visvesvaraya Canal near Thibbanahalli in Mandya taluk on Monday. However, alert locals rescued one person and shifted him to the hospital.
The deceased are Aslam Pasha (55) and car owner Fayaz alias Battery (58). Search is on to find Peer Khan (45). The injured is identified as Nayaz. All are residents of Halahalli in Mandya.
They were on their way to Shivalli via Machanahalli from Hulikere side, when the mishap took place. The accident occurred when the driver tried to avoid hitting against an electricity transformer on the left side of the road, and the car veered off and plunged into the canal.
As there was a loud noise after the car fell into the canal, those working in the fields nearby rushed to the spot, rescued Nayaz and shifted him immediately to the district hospital, in an ambulance.
While two bodies have been retrieved, search is on for Peer Khan. Deputy Commissioner Kumara, and SP Mallikarjun Baladandi visited the spot.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel struggled to lift the car from the water. The search operation has been suspended, due to darkness. It will continue on Tuesday morning, according to sources.
Mandya MLA P Ravikumar has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. Shivalli Police have registered a case.
