Belagavi: A farmer from Karnataka's Rajapur village in Mudalagi taluk was kidnapped by unidentified persons from his agricultural lands on February 14 and demand of Rs 5 crore as ransom was made for his release.

Basavaraj Nilappa Ambi, aged 48 was kidnapped at around 11:30 pm on Friday from his agricultural lands at Danapur village in Gokak taluk.

Superintendent of Police Dr Bheemashankar Guled informed on Wednesday that Ambi's wife Shobha Basavaraj Ambi received a call from the kidnappers to demand Rs 5 crore.

The kidnappers had made a call to Shobha from Ambi's phone.

Later, Shobha accompanied by her son and few others went to the designated spot at Nippani to pay the ransom and secure his release, but kidnappers did not turn up nor release the victim.

Following which the kidnappers called Shobha again and expressed angst for being accompanied by people while they had asked her to come alone to pay the money.

The kidnappers then threatened to kill Ambi, after which Shobha filed a complaint with the Ghataprabha police station on Tuesday evening, SP said.

Further investigation to trace the farmer and nab the accused is under way and police team has been formed.
