New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday said that it has received a proposal from Karnataka to include Upper Bhadra project under the centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP) scheme on last October 10 this year.

Visvesvaraya Jala Nigam Limited is implementing the project, Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V Somanna informed Lok Sabha.

Replying Haveri Lok Sabha member Basavaraj Bommai, the Minister said that this project will implement by Karnataka Government.

The state government has been demanding the Centre to declare the Upper Bhadra as national project.

While rejecting the state plea, the Centre assured to fund the project under the PMKSY.

The Jal Shakti Ministry sought fresh proposal from the state with compilation of updated financial details for the project, including the expenditure made, balance cost and the updated eligible central assistance based on the balance cost.

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) was launched during the year 2015-16 to enhance physical access of water on farm and expand cultivable area under assured irrigation.

Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) is one of the components of PMKSY, whereby partial financial assistance is being provided by Government of India for identified major/ medium irrigation projects.

To another question on Mekedatu project, the Minister said it was discussed in the Cauvery Water Management Authority in February, 2024 and taking majority members views, subject of the project has been referred to the Central Water Commission.
