The vacant plots in Chikkamagaluru have been turning into dumping grounds.

The plots at Hosamane layout, Basavanahalli, Dantaramakki, Ramanahalli, Jayanagara, Kempanahalli, Kumvempunagara, Uppalli, Housing Board, Christian Colony, Undedasarahalli, Ayyappanagara, Tippunagara, Lakshmeeshanagara are piled high with domestic waste and plastic waste.

Bottles, plastic waste, papers, wet waste, old sandals, thermocol and other waste is dumped on vacant sites by the residents.

The stench emanating from the waste piles has become a nuisance to the neighbourhood residents.

Hosamane Layout resident M S Nagesh said, “People come by car and dump the waste on the vacant site and leave. A few miscreants even park their car near the vacant sites and engage in consuming alcohol and dump the liquor bottles and leave. The vacant plots even serve as an open urinal for men.”

“Parthenium has grown on these vacant plots. The plastic wrappers fly in the wind and reach our houses. The city municipal council members are least bothered on this dumping menace. The owners should fence their sites,” said another resident.

Furthermore, dogs, cows and pigs scatter the waste all over the road, complained residents.

The dog menace is also on the rise near the vacant sites because of the dumping of food waste with other waste, which has been causing inconvenience to the movement of children and pedestrians, said residents.

Jayanagara resident R Shibu said, “Some residents do not hand over the waste to the waste collection vehicle of the CMC and end up dumping the waste beside the road and vacant sites.”

CMC President Shilpa Rajashekar said, “Garbage up to about 50 tonnes is collected from houses, shops, Kalyana Mantapas and buildings in the CMC limits.”
