Police were successful in cracking 26 theft cases and valuables worth Rs 20.87 lakh, which were returned to the respective owners at a property parade held here, on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police Amit Singh returned the gold and silver articles at the programme held at  D R grounds here on Thursday morning. The articles included gold and silver ornaments, motorbikes, mopeds and mobile phones.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh said 282 theft cases have been reported between January 1 and April 30, 2013, he said. In all, valuables worth Rs 1.37 crore have been stolen. Out of this, 76 cases has been busted and 103 accused have been arrested. Valuables worth Rs 51,88,346 has been recovered. About 38 per cent of cases has been solved, Singh added.

Gold articles worth Rs 2.67 lakh, two-wheelers worth Rs 3.96 lakh has been returned from Hassan Circle. Rural - Rs 3.95 lakh gold articles, Holenarasipur - Rs 4.61 lakh gold and silver articles, Belur Circle - Rs 4.10 lakh gold articles, Arsikere - Rs 1.13 lakh gold articles have been returned to the owners.

Compared to last year, the number of theft incidents have come down said Amit Singh and added that night patrol would be intensified to prevent such incidents.
The Canara Bank ATM machine theft will be traced soon as the cops have got some vital clues, he said. There is a shortage of 35 constables, six sub inspectors in the district, which would be filled soon, he added. Proposal has been sent for construction of traffic police station and police outpost, he said.

CCTV cameras are being installed at vantage points in Hassan city and works related to this would begin soon. This would enable effective monitoring of the crime incidents round the clock, he said.
