Mangaluru: VHP leader Sharan Pumpwell who failed to respond to notices and appear for enquiry was arrested by Kadri police and produced before a court on Tuesday.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal said after the murder of Suhas Shetty on May 1, Sharan had while addressing media people alleged that Shetty was murdered by “jihadi Islamic terrorists”.

He had caimed that the banned organisation PFI was directly involved in the murder of Suhas. When the bundh call given by him did not receive good response on May 2, supporters of Sharan, allegedly incited by his statement, created unrest in various parts of Mangaluru. This led to damage to public property, communal tension, and disruption of public peace, Commissioner said.

Thus, a suo motto case was registered against Sharan Pumpwell at Mangaluru East police station under Sections 49, 196(1), 324(2), 324(4), 324(5), and 353(2) of the BNS.

However Sharan failed to cooperate and did not respond to two notices dieecting him to appear for an inquiry. On Tuesday, Sharan was arrested by Kadri Police, Commissioner said.
