But, the mistake was set right immediately after one of the students approached VTU and all the 28 certificates issued were withdrawn and the students were asked to surrender their certificates, according to VTU registrar K V A Balaji.

He told Deccan Herald on Wednesday that online technical error in the first section of the inputs of VTU that led to issue of certificates was set right the very next day.

“Errors are not unusual in online examinations. But the VTU does conduct a second check and rectifies the mistakes, if any. In this case too, the error was set right immediately,” he added.

On action against persons responsible for the error, the registrar said the matter had been investigated and action had been initiated. “It’s an internal matter of the university and cannot be elaborated,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gautam, a student who had received the degree had submitted a petition to the police contending irregularities in the VTU and demanded that a case be registered against the VTU.

When contacted superintendent of police Soniya Narang said that on verification with VTU authorities, it was found that the petition was baseless and the case was not registered.

VTU academic senate member Rajendra P Khataria here on Monday had said that he would press for action against persons responsible for the faux pas, in the forthcoming meeting of the senate.

With VTU vice chancellor H P Khincha's term nearing completion, some vested interests have started a “political” campaign to get a candidate of their choice to be appointed as new vice chancellor, sources in the VTU claimed.
